The earliest record I have is the marriage of John Mitchell to Janet Mathison on 1st July 1746 in Newlands, Peeblesshire. They had 5 Children Shushan(?), William, Alexander, John and Archibald.

Archibald (b.1762) Married Betty Tait in Newlands and had 3 children, John, Betty and James.  Archibald's occupation was listed as "Weaver"

John Mitchell  was born 1792 in Newlands, Peeblesshire, Scotland.
In Carrington, Midlothian on 6th June1817 he married Agnes (Nancy) Monfries, daughter of John Monfries and Margaret (nee Adminston) from Temple.

John's occupation was recorded as Forrester.  The wording on his headstone says he was 'Overseer' at Rosebury for 24 years. He and Agnes had 6 Children.  After working as overseer John and his eldest son Archibald (b.1817) moved to Leith and started a timber business, John Mitchell and Company.  When Archibald died in 1863 Alexander the youngest son came to Leith and joined the business.  The Mitchell timber yards are still in Leith, run by a descendant of Alexander.
James
(b.1896) 2nd eldest son stayed in Carrington and became overseer at Rosebury like his father before him. See his headstone
